Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left, the Ford family was taken care of by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford became attracted to acting in her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good for the school. Ford later applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also regularly worked in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy, which has been added to her repertoire in the year 1996.
